Portrait of Nguyễn Văn Sơn, bronze caster in his fifties, in the Đại Bái foundry at dawn, soot on his face, moulds and charcoal glow behind, seventh generation of the family trade

Nguyễn Văn Sơn

Bronze caster · Đại Bái village · Seventh generation

The scholar’s desk had a water dropper for the ink stone, and the village cast them in the form of animals. This one is a buffalo asleep, its mouth the spout, cast in sand and chased by hand.

It still works for ink. It also keeps a desk company.
