Portrait of Phạm Văn Đức, sixth-generation potter in his fifties, standing at the open brick kiln door in Bát Tràng, clay on his forearms, sixth generation of the family trade

Phạm Văn Đức

Potter · Bát Tràng village · Sixth generation

A bottle form thrown in one piece, the neck drawn up last, glazed in the family’s ash glaze and set at the front of the kiln where the wood ash falls thickest. The glaze ran on the shoulder and thinned at the neck, as it does when the fire has its way.

For branches, for a single stem, for nothing. It is the one Đức kept back from the load.
