Reading table, carved ironwood
Gỗ lim — ironwood, the dense dark timber of temple pillars; here dried three years and joined without a nail.

Đồng Kỵ workshop
The top is one board of ironwood, dried under cover for three years before a chisel touched it. The legs and apron are joined to it with mortise, tenon and wedge — no nails, no glue — so the table can be knocked apart and rebuilt by whoever inherits it. The relief on the apron follows the figure of the wood.
Finished with oil and wax, so the timber keeps moving with the seasons. A hairline at a joint in a dry winter will close in spring.

The making
Fourteen weeks, after three years
Most of the time in a Đồng Kỵ table is spent before it exists, in the timber yard.

II
The joints
Mortise, tenon and wedge cut by hand to fit without glue.
III
The carving
Relief cut into the apron, following the grain.
IV
The finish
Oiled and waxed; the table left a month to settle before crating.
