Lantern, open weave
Đèn lồng — a lantern; here an open rattan weave around a frame, made for a single bulb and the shadows it throws.

Trần Thị Mai
The hexagonal open weave the village once used for fish traps, turned into a shade: a bamboo frame bent over steam, rattan woven around it loosely enough for the light to come through in a pattern.
Mai counts the hexagons as she counts the rain; a lantern with one wrong count throws a wrong shadow, and she will not let it leave.
