Portrait of Nguyễn Thị Lan, rattan weaver in her fifties, seated in a sunlit doorway in Phú Vinh with a half-woven basket in her lap, fourth generation of the family trade

Nguyễn Thị Lan

Rattan weaver · Phú Vinh village · Fourth generation

Three trays in the mat weave — one over, one under, counted from the centre outward — in cane Lan splits herself, finer than the men do. The rims are bamboo, bent over steam and bound to the body.

For bread, for fruit, for the things that gather on a table. They nest, and they will darken from honey to amber with the years.

The making

Three weeks, in four movements

The simplest pattern in the village is also the one that shows every mistake; the weave has nowhere to hide.

I

The cane

Split by knife along the fibre; dried in the courtyard sun.

II

The centre

Each tray begun from a cross of strands and counted outward.

III

The weave

One over, one under, the tension held in the hands for hours.

IV

The rims

Bamboo bent over steam and bound; the three left a week to settle into one another.
