Rattan, bamboo & sedge
Nothing from that village in this craft at the moment. New works arrive each month; the letter will tell you.
Looking for something that is not here — a size, a colour, a pair? Most of our artisans take commissions, and we will carry the conversation for you.
Commission a workRattan and bamboo are the delta's oldest household crafts: the fish trap, the rice basket, the mat on the floor. Phú Vinh, thirty kilometres west of Hà Nội, made them fine enough for the court, and the finest households there still split their cane by hand along the fibre, dry it in the courtyard sun and weave patterns with names — rain, fish-scale, mat, lotus.
What we carry is that fine work: light, tight, the colour of honey, made to be used and to darken with use. A Phú Vinh vessel will hold water for a minute when new; it will hold letters for a lifetime.
Every piece names its weaver and carries her woven tag inside the rim. Most are small editions; a few are unique. Prices include crating, insured shipping and duties.
The makers
Caring for rattan & bamboo
Wipe with a barely damp cloth and let dry in air. A light mist of water once a season in dry climates keeps the fibres supple. Keep off wet floors; sedge mats roll, never fold.
